Simple Summer Activities for a Slower, More Meaningful Season
Summer always feels a little magical where I live.
For much of the year, Eastern Idaho is covered in snow. The mountains are white, the temperatures are cold, and life naturally moves indoors. But when summer arrives, everything changes. The fields turn green, wildflowers begin to bloom, and people travel from all over to experience the beauty of this little corner of the world.
While many visitors fill their days with busy itineraries and packed schedules, I've discovered that my favorite summer memories are often the simplest ones.
I'm a homebody by nature, and even when I venture out, I prefer experiences that feel meaningful rather than rushed. Summer gives me permission to slow down and enjoy the things that often get overlooked in everyday life.
Take a Quiet Walk
Simple day hikes are some of my favorite summer activities.
I enjoy wandering slowly along a trail, taking in the scenery and looking for small details I might otherwise miss. Sometimes I'm searching for the perfect photograph. Other times I'm looking for an interesting rock, a unique piece of driftwood, or a flower I've never noticed before.
Out here, identifying wildlife can feel like a scavenger hunt. There is always a new bird to spot, a wildflower to identify, or an unexpected discovery waiting around the next bend.
The beauty isn't in reaching a destination. It's in paying attention along the way.
Bring a Book Outdoors
One of my favorite reading memories took place in California's Carrizo Plains.
While my friends explored the surrounding area, I settled into a patch of tall golden grass with a book. There wasn't another person in sight. The only sounds were the wind moving through the grass and the occasional rustle of nature around me.
It was peaceful in a way that is difficult to describe.
That memory still inspires me today. Whenever summer arrives, I find myself wanting to recreate that feeling: a comfortable chair, a quiet corner outdoors, a good book, and nowhere else to be.
Sometimes the best reading room doesn't have walls.
Spend an Afternoon Antiquing
Not all of my favorite summer activities happen in nature.
I have always loved antique stores. Truthfully, I'm more of a looker than a buyer, but I enjoy the experience of wandering through old shops and imagining the stories behind the treasures on the shelves.
I love the creaking floorboards, the scent of old wood, and the conversations that seem to happen naturally with shop owners. Many of them know the history of the town better than anyone else and are always willing to share a story or two.
When I browse, I often find myself drawn to old pitchers, teapots, vintage fabrics, and anything that feels like it has lived an interesting life.
Explore a New Town
Whenever I visit a new town, there are three places I almost always seek out.
The first is an independent bookstore. Not a large chain store, but a small local shop filled with books chosen by people who genuinely love reading.
The second is a tea shop. I have always enjoyed loose-leaf tea, and I love discovering new blends and learning about different flavors.
The third is the local antique store. Every town seems to have one, and each one tells a different story.
These small stops often become my favorite part of a trip.
The Beauty of a Slower Summer
There will always be a place for busy schedules, packed calendars, and exciting adventures.
But some of life's greatest joys are found in slower moments.
A quiet walk.
A good book.
A conversation with a shop owner.
A treasure discovered on a dusty shelf.
These aren't the experiences that usually make headlines or go viral on social media. Yet they are often the moments we remember most.
Summer doesn't have to be extravagant to be meaningful.
Sometimes the simplest days are the ones that leave us feeling the most refreshed, grateful, and fully alive.
